'When I recall my old paintings from the Formism period, I see in them an attempt to break up the picture plane, in which colour was an auxiliary means of achieving a graphic rather than a painterly effect. Already in the rhythm period, my paintings feature more strongly emphasised colour, but in both periods the issue of form prevails over colour and relegates it to the background. Gradual liberation from form leads to a new period in my work, in which colour becomes the most important issue. Colour, which is to painting what form is to sculpture'. Wacław Wąsowicz, Exhibition of works at the Polish Art Club, 16 March-16 April, Warsaw 1931 (nlb.)
