Wacław Pawliszak began his painting studies in Wojciech Gerson's Drawing Class, continued at the Kraków School of Fine Arts with Florian Cynk and Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, and from 1883 to 1885 in the composition department with Jan Matejko. He completed his artistic studies in Munich and Paris, where in 1889 he received a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition. This led to his paintings also appearing on the art markets in Berlin and London. After returning to Poland, he settled in Warsaw. He traveled extensively, visiting Algeria, Morocco, Tunis, and living in Rome for a year. The artist's favorite subject matter was motifs related to the East. He painted genre scenes, battle compositions, horses, and warriors. The work presented in the catalogue undoubtedly reflects his journeys to exotic regions of the globe. "Wanderer on a Camel" is an expression of his strong inspiration from the Orient. The depiction is all the more intriguing due to its sketchy nature. The rider's silhouette is shown against a blank background, suggesting its studio nature from the outset. Furthermore, the animal's head, a typical painter's sketch, is also featured alongside it.
