Tadeusz Makowski

"Landscape from Normandy" ("Paysage normand")

oil/canvas, 27 x 41 cm

Object ID 161793

Landscapes and Landscape Studies bear witness to how strongly Tadeusz Makowski was influenced by Jan Stanisławski and how deeply he wished to remain faithful to his master’s guidance. They also testify to the profound emotional bond between the student and the master. In all of Makowski’s landscapes from his student period, one can observe diligent work on deepening the values of color, incorporating light, and capturing the mood characteristic of the Polish landscape. It is also evident what kind of training the young artist underwent under his master’s guidance, working directly from nature, and how much he gained from classes in his “studio”—especially in terms of sensitivity and a keen eye for color. The Landscape from Normandy, maintained in an almost monochromatic range, is an example of subtle coloristic exploration. The artist brings out form and plasticity not through line or contrast, but through vibrations and intensity of color within a single tonal range. This painting demonstrates that Makowski was both a lyricist and a colorist.
