Zucker's work on display is a graceful, topographical postcard from Venice. The painter depicts the view from Ponte Rosso, with Ponte del Cavallo and the distinctive façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco visible in the background. The canvas's nebulous, multicolored color scheme is characteristic of Zucker's mature work and also enters into a discreet dialogue with the great masters of painting from the old Serenissima, whose works the American painter admired in the city's collections. Zucker's first trip to Italy took place in the 1930s. In 1948, he settled in Arceuil, near Paris, and from then on, European and American travels became more frequent. "In Italy," writes Joanna Tarnawska, the painter's monographer, "he spent most of his time in Venice and the cities of Sicily. In Venice, he painted narrow streets full of people, squares and churches – San Giorgio Maggiore, St. Mark's Basilica (...)" (Jakub Zucker, text by Joanna Tarnawska, Warsaw 2011, p. 19) – the most obvious landmarks of the city. This did not prevent Zucker from conveying both the bustle and the extraordinary aura of the "city on the lagoon."
