In 1924, Bronisława Rychter-Janowska embarked on a long journey across Europe. She took her adopted daughter, Matylda, with her on this artistic Grand Tour. The travelers first stopped in Vienna. Enchanted by the splendor of the imperial metropolis, they continued their journey. The next, more important stops on this journey were in sunny Italy. Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples were just some of the cities they visited. However, this was not the end of their exotic journeys. From southern Italy, they quickly moved north, heading towards the western reaches of the Old Continent. Spain welcomed them with hospitality, excellent weather, and monuments no less interesting than those seen in Italy. Via Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid, the women finally reached France. There, finally, Lourdes and the stunning city of lights – Paris. After that, it was time to return to Poland, most likely in 1927. It is therefore highly probable that the landscape presented in our catalogue was created during this expedition. Rychter-Janowska meticulously recorded the date and location. "Ghifa, August 19, 1926," we read. Therefore, the painter spent the summer of that year at Lago Maggiore, an exceptionally picturesque body of water on the border between Italy and Switzerland. The artist visited this region relatively often. This is evidenced by the numerous landscapes depicting the lake itself and white sailboats sailing on it, as well as the islands scattered around and the historical monuments on the coast.
