Bronisław Olszewski was a painter, educator, and art critic born in Lviv in 1874. Initially, he studied law, but after four years, he moved to Kraków to study at the School of Fine Arts in the studio of Jacek Malczewski and Leon Wyczółkowski (1896-1904). In the first decade of the 20th century, the artist traveled extensively through France (where he also studied at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi), Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In 1909, he settled permanently in Kraków, where he was active in the Society of Friends of Fine Arts and led the "Motyw" artistic group. He also initiated the construction of the Kraków House of Visual Artists on Łobzowska Street. Olszewski initially worked under the influence of Jacek Malczewski's art, drawing inspiration not from the symbolism of Young Poland, but from painterly values. Over time, his palette began to brighten, and his decorative qualities increased. A prime example of this is the landscape painting presented at the auction, depicting the typical rock formations of the island's surroundings. Olszewski wasn't the first painter captivated by the island's vibrant colors. In the early 20th century, Józef Mączyński, Erwin Czerwenka, Samuel Hirszenberg, Józef Rapacki, and Maurycy Trębacz found inspiration in Capri. Capri was also a special place for Edward Okuń, Feliks Michał Wygrzywalski, and Jan Styka. It is certain that the island, described by Julian Tuwim as "a flower shop whose window is the sea," was a magical place for every artist sensitive to the world around them.
