Krzysztof Miller took photographs for “Gazeta Wyborcza” since 1989. In that role, he created numerous photo-reportages, including the cycle “Zair” and stories about the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution and the wars in Bosnia and Georgia. In 2013, Miller’s book titled “13 wojen i jedna. Prawdziwa historia reportera wojennego” (Thirteen and One Wars. The True Story of a War Correspondent) was published. He explained: “I photographed out of the sense of duty. The ne- cessity to bear witness. To document. Profession- ally, but not chasing sensation or news. Rather, with a vague sense of obligation to document the end of that life. Its history. As I was taking the photographs, I knew I would not send them to the editorial office. I would not publish them. I would not throw them to the world to be devoured. I took them as a human. Just like that. As if at a funeral. I accompanied the killed one on his last journey. His travel companions were, among other people, Wojciech Jagielski, Paweł Smoleński, and Maria Wernikows- ka. When he left the battlefields and front lines, he went to refugees and regions struck by famine, which he also documented in photo-reportages. Often, he would take a few days break and go back to Warsaw, where he photographed local events. Regardless of the covered topic, he was always interested the most in anonymous people who faced calamities.
